Greg Valentine: A Couple N-Bombs Away From Trouble...
Look... I know he was making a heel promo... and I know he never once used the aforementioned N-word...
But there's still something very off-putting about this.

Hello fellow fans of pro wrestling, I'm the new guy on the block. You can call me Rob, I'm going to take you on a strange but delightful trip into the past. We are going to get into our pro wrestling time machine, which strangely looks like Sgt. Slaughter's camo-limo. Strange. No, we don't have to get this thing up to 88 miles per hour to use it. Just sit back and enjoy the show. So first off, I need to say I was a DIE HARD NWA fan. I loved The Skyscrapers (both versions), and Mean Mark who later became known as The Undertaker. Why am I bringing this up? Because this post is going to be about WCW's Super Nintendo Game : Superbrawl.

Like
you can see right there, the cover of the game featured the biggest
stars in the company at the time: Ric Flair, Sting and Vader. This
wouldn't be WCW's only game on a Nintendo console though, but I think
this was the only Super Nintendo game that we ever saw. The graphics
weren't that flashy, but it was great for when the game came out. You
got to choose from Ric Flair, Sting, Vader, Ron Simmons (He left WCW and
became Farooq in the WWE) Johnny B. Bad, The Steiner Brothers and Rick
Rude to name a few.
It was interesting navigating the character select menu, the wrestlers would randomly talk saying their catch phrases and such. Oddly, they didn't really do it when you selected them they sort of just did it randomly. Sadly, I never rented this on a console, I never actually bought the game either. I had found a ROM file of this game on a ROM site and I used my Super Nintendo emulator to play this.
With the very limited amount of time that I've played this game, I have to say it was fun. It's your simple old school wrestling game, you can pull off moves doing various button combinations on your SNES controller. Don't ask me the button combos, it has been too long since I've played this game and I've probably forgotten them all. The game play was cool and it was fun. For me to be interested in game, it had to be fun. I remember sitting on my computer with my gamepad (a usb controller for your computer) drinking Mtn. Dew, eating Cheetos and just rocking out to this game. This game holds a big place in my heart. You will never find another game like this and this was the last game that the company FCI ever put out. That in itself is pretty sad. The graphics were awesome and the game was flashy enough to hold my interest for quite sometime.

You
can't think of old school wrestling games without this game being
somewhere on the list. I know there were better wrestling games out
there at the time; the WWF games like Royal Rumble and Survivor Series
were pretty good in their own right. I'm a die hard WCW fan so this
game is on the top of the list of retro games. It's not a gem of a
wrestling game, but it's fun to play through and see all the old
wrestlers again. To be honest I wished they'd remake this game on The
360 or the PS4 or something but Vince McMahon holds the rights to
everything WCW and I don't see a new WCW game coming out too soon. On
that note, some of the old WCW wrestlers are making it into WWE games,
Bill Goldberg is going to be in WWE 2k14. So there might indeed be hope for a WCW game on a newer console.
I doubt it though.
I doubt it though.
Here is some game play of the game.
Credit goes to the original uploader of the video.
Watching this video did bring back some fond memories of the game. I really hope the newer wrestling fans get to play this or just experience it for a little while. I'm going to actually be going to used game stores and looking for this game. I really want to experience this game once again. It was awesome looking back at a game from my favorite wrestling organization. I just want to thank everyone for reading this little blurb I put up here and next week I'll be back with something. I think I'll do something on NWA or WCW or both!!

Having just written about Ayumi Kurihara's recent retirement, I was thinking of Aja Kong's part in that. That thought of course brought me to the moment I first saw her. A moment that would forever add a new word to my vocabulary...

Dump Matsumoto and Bull Nakano... in the WWF???

All right, all right... we all know that Bull Nakano had a pretty good run in the WWF during the early to mid-90's... mostly known for her feud with Alundra Blayze. But what you may NOT have known (and I certainly didn't know until today)... is that she made some appearances in 1986, with her partner/mentor, joshi heel legend Dump Matsumoto!
WhattaHeel! - Don Muracco is my hero... My MEATBALL HERO...
Wow. I think this may be the greatest heel move in ALL of pro-wrestling, including all of WWE history!
This just goes to show that you don't need a thousand run ins, a hundred post match beatdowns and a hummer controversy to draw heat from your audience! Here, Muracco did it with a frickin' meatball grinder!
Also, Albano slipping... priceless!

Shooty! - Earthquake vs. Koji Kitao
SWS Wrestle Dream in Kobe
This match, which was billed as SWS vs. WWF (you know, back when WWF did interpromotionals with feds other than themselves), is a real interesting case. Here we have Koji Kitao, who seems destined to prove his toughness with the uber-professional John Tenta.

I assume that everyone reading this blog is aware that wrestling is a performance... with predetermined endings and sometimes even whole matches laid out. And usually on this blog, I like to keep that kayfabe going. However, somethings can only be explained using insider terms and language. Such is the case of Wendy Richter and the WWE.
Andre the Giant on the David Letterman Show
While certainly David Letterman is no stranger to having guests from the pro-wrestling industry on his show (I.E. the famous Jerry Lawler - Andy Kaufman confrontation), I was surprised to see this, as I've never seen it before:

PRIXEL DERP WRESTLEGAME REVIEW - WWF Superstars (1989, Technos Japan)
One of the first major license arcade wrestling games to hit the streets did so in 1989 when Technos Japan released WWF Superstars. While not an immensely deep game, it did offer its share of action and enjoyment to those who had enough quarters (it ate quarters like nothing else, save WWF Wrestlefest).

Match Review: WWF/SWS Wrestlefest 1991: Road Warriors vs. Genichiro Tenryu and Hulk Hogan
Road Warriors vs. Hogan/Tenryu
A few points:
- Holy shit Hogan is an ass here! First, he knocks over a camera man as he's walking down the aisle. Then, he knocks a ringboy off the apron. A ringboy whose great offense was OPENING THE ROPES FOR HIM! Then, ON TOP OF ALL THAT, he BOOTS the ringside camera right on the lense! What are you doing this for? At the very least, that last point gave us an impressive visual.
Oh, yeah. He also casually tosses his belt (THAT'S WHAT IT IS, WWE! NOT A TITLE! THE PHYSICAL OBJECT THAT REPRESENTS THE TITLE IS THE BELT!) to the ref Hebner like it was garbage. To anyone who complains about championships meaning nothing, there's a visual for you!
- Great power shown by the Road Warriors, as Hawk lifts Tenryu and Animal (after some struggling) lifts Hogan in a very impressive power display.
- Tenryu with stereo ENZUIGIRIS... that look like they lightly grazed their targets.
- Hogan going NUTS with chairs! Sure, this is 1991 and the headshots are protected, but still.
All in all, a fun and unusual match! It's like a bizzarre mismash... Tenryu doesn't have his usual thunderstorm entrance theme and the Road Warriors come out to their NWA/Japan Iron Man theme... but Hogan comes out to 'Real American.'
Oh yeah, and a fun pull apart at the end!

Battle Royale - 1991, from the Royal Albert Hall
A great find! Crystal clear video and, even more important, I've never seen it before! (NOTE: this FINE video has since been deleted. Here are UNEMBEDDABLE (seriously, asshole?) vids of the same thing: Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
This is from 1991, and from my information, very soon after Flair's WWF debut!
This is perhaps the one and only time the Undertaker and Andre the Giant appeared in the same match, though, they did not appear together.
Great 3-way finish with Typhoon, The Mountie, and Davey Boy!

Layin' the SMACK down on Smackdown(!) - 02/17/2000
By: Chris "Sledge" Douglas
What was the deal with the "shove the babyface into the womb of the
bus" angle on Smackdown(!) just a few scant minutes ago? Where was
Kane when Cactus got shoved in, after he himself had been
unceremoniously stuck in there? And where were they BOTH when Dwayne
was getting ready to inseminate this sexy bus? What the PHUCK was the
deal with Rocky magically appearing out of the bus with 2x4 in tow?
Why didn't Kane and Cactus do the same? Where did the bus take them
anyway? To Hunter's house in Greenwich for tea and FUCKING cookies?
Did they all go to Kane's old dental office to get high on the laughing
gas?
On the brighter side, Tazz looked alright. While beating Gangrel wasn't
the greatest thing in the history of puroresu, it certainly proves that
they ain't burying him. Take a look at his promos. "Survival is not
an option". Definitely cool by Sledgecorp standards.
Not to mention the crazy face heat he's been getting no matter where he
goes. Note to WWF... please let him cut a promo soon... this guy spews
some killer tough-guy venom when in control of the stick... let him
fly.
Someone I know predicted that he would be buried. His quote
was, "They're gonna water him down just like they did to the Dudley's".
Welp, look at the Dudley's now. Hell, it seems that Buh Buh Ray damn
near ORGASMs every time he puts chicks through tables. That sure as
hell ain't watered down. One thing about the WWF in this era of
Attitude... you gotta give them time. If after say, oh, 7 months and
the guy is still being screwed over or phucked up, THEN make those
comments.
But, you never know... the WWF has been known for making some really
STUPID decisions (the Gobbledegooker... some Thanksgiving tradition),
so only time will tell this convoluted tale of Tazz and...
porn.
You know what? I'm really starting to dig those Mae Young bits...
she's actually quite funny. Look, I know that I did say that
that match with Moolah against Ivory and... uh... someone else... was
disturbing... and I still stick by that. But in a non-wrestling
capacity, I think Mae plays the drunken old bat to a tee. Hell,
it's even giving Mark "Brainyeurism" Henry some face heat! Only two
people (her and D-Lo) have accomplished this herculean feat. If it
works, FLY WITH IT!!! FLY DAMMIT!!!
Catch ya.

Vince Russo leaves WWF for WCW!
The headline rang out among all the message boards around the country.
Every Fidonet node was filled with people in disbelief.
Why did he leave? Why now, when the WWF was at it's peak of popularity?
And who's that bastard sleeping with my wife?
The answers where simple, Russo assures us. He said he had grown tired of the WWF and wanted a new challenge.
And quite a challenge it was.
Plenty of talent. 0 motivation. Just give them all a story and things will straighten themselves out.
But weren't there stories before, any casual fan would ask?
Yes and no. In the technical sense yes. Anything that explains why a match happens is technically a story. But the problem was, said the Bible according to Russo, that these stories had no cohesion, no logic. It was his duty to give them that purpose.
Some agree with him and leave it at that. But some delve deeper.
Some actually believe that it may have been because he didn't have a clue where to go next with some of the stories. The Austin McMahon saga was a classic on many levels, and while not perfect, helped the WWF gain it's solid foot on the Monday Night arena. But where to go from this? What else can you do to keep the fans interest? Those may have been factors leading up to Russo's and co-hort Ed Ferrera's quick and incredible departure.
Now, it is obvious, the change is very visible. The backstage vignettes, the shorter matches, the slightly more cohesive storylines, and even the backstage "they're WALKING(!)" sequences mark the major dent that Russo and Ferrera have made to World CHampionship Wrestling. Even Turner's censors seemed to have lightened up a bit. More T&A with the Nitro Girls. Kimberly kneeling down and removing a protective cup from the pants of pseudo wrestler David Flair. Both examples of how much more they are now able to get away with than the previous establishment.
Has it made a dent in the ratings? Yes, but by a point or so. Not even close to the reign that the WWF is holding on so dearly to. But time may tell a different story soon.
But with change comes a price. With so many earth-shaking, TV crashing changes to the format, the new "Powers that be (or powers to be according to Schiavonne)", seemed to overlook one fact. Changing so much will alienate their core audience... the fans looking for a change. On USA and TNT now run two similar shows, with Nitro now a sort of "RAW-lite" to many.
Long story short, the question of whether or not it was a good choice, and of how it will affect both in the long run, is still up in the air. Maybe the answer is just a few more weeks away.
