The ORIGINAL Screwjob

I assume that everyone reading this blog is aware that wrestling is a performance... with predetermined endings and sometimes even whole matches laid out. And usually on this blog, I like to keep that kayfabe going. However, somethings can only be explained using insider terms and language. Such is the case of Wendy Richter and the WWE.

Wendy Richter was the WWF Women's Champion during their big heyday in the 80's and as such she was regarded as heving been just as popular as their World's champ, Hulk Hogan. I don't pretend to know the behind the scenes shenanigans that led to this, but it did indeed lead to the following:

As you can see, Fabulous Moolah, as the Spider Lady, won the title, dispite announcer confusion.

So, what happened to Bret in 1997 was not exactly unprecedented.

However, I LOVE how the Fink announces the result!

Anyway, this led to Richter leaving the company. She worked a bit elsewhere, including , I believe, a stint in the AWA, but ultimately retired from the business. She wouldn't be seen or mentioned much again until a somewhat embarrassing episode of the Piper's Pit in 2012 with Cyndi Lauper and Heath Slater.

Moolah's career, on the other hand continued up until the late 80's. She popped back up again in the late 90's WWF Attitude era with sporadic appearances, and even once again winning the World Women's Championship.

Life is weird sometimes.
